Lenten Regulations Regarding Fast and Abstinence

ASH WEDNESDAY, March 6, 2019, and GOOD FRIDAY, April 19, 2019 , are days of fast and abstinence. FRIDAYS OF LENT are also days of abstinence

ABSTINENCE is to be observed by Catholics 14 years of age and older. Abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be used at all.

FASTING is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed.

Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fasting and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted.

Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

Act of Contrition

Oh, my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee. And I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell, but most of all, because they offend Thee my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.
